Professional answers to everyday questions within the hair and beauty industry.

What is vegan hair and beauty?

You have probably heard and seen a lot about vegan products in the hair and beauty industry in recent months, but what does that really mean? And which products and brands qualify as vegan? These are the questions this blog will answer, as well as giving you some great examples of vegan alternatives you can find here, on the Ellisons website.

What does vegan mean?

In its simplest sense, veganism is the view that animals should not have to suffer for humans to live the lives they want to. This is commonly associated with the food we eat and can be seen as an extension of vegetarianism. Vegan menus in restaurants and cafes are now a common sight. Similarly, any trip down a supermarket aisle is punctuated with reminders of the vegan craze that has swept the nation; cow’s milk alternatives, meat-free meat and vegan butter substitutes are everywhere to be seen.

It was only a matter of time before the hair and beauty industry shifted to accommodate vegan’s needs, and sure enough in recent years we have seen a huge range of products and brands that market themselves as vegan and cruelty-free. With big names like L’Oréal and OPI® leading from the front, to new cult favourites like VOESH® and Glitterbels springing up seemingly from nowhere, the vegan revolution has proven an exciting time for us in the industry. That said, the speed of it may leave you a little confused as to which brands you can trust, and which products are the right ones for your vegan clients.

What is vegan hair and beauty?

Vegan hair

The hair industry has not been untouched by this vegan revolution either, with the emphasis here on the products not including any animal-derived ingredients, as well as qualifying as cruelty-free by ensuring that no animal testing took place during their manufacturing process. One of the biggest hair brands in the world, OLAPLEX, is fully vegan and cruelty free meaning you can stock their amazing hair care system safe in the knowledge that no animals were harmed in the process. If your clients want colour, then give them vegan colour, with Pulp Riot also qualifying on their full range of semi-permanent colours, toners and bleach.

Vegan nails

Last but by no means least, there is a growing range of nail polish and nail art products that are fully vegan-friendly. You know the movement is here to stay with a huge brand like OPI launching their new Nature Strong collection recently, highlighting their commitment to sustainability as well ensuring their range is vegan and cruelty-free. Similarly, the exciting Glitterbels by Nails by Annabel is a new collection of stunning vegan nail art alternatives. Their glitters, foils and polishes are perfect for creating incredible looks for your vegan, or indeed non-vegan clients.

While vegan hair and beauty is a relatively new phenomenon, it is certainly one that looks set to continue for quite some time. Ensure that you always stock a great range of vegan alternatives to ensure that you cater for ever client’s individual needs, and there’s no where better to look for them than right here at Ellisons.
