1. How do I get my student discount code?

You can find your 15% student discount code on the flyer included in the box of your student kit delivery. Simply refer to the flyer for full details on how to redeem it.

2. What benefits can full-time students claim?

Full-time students on beauty, hair or nail courses may not qualify for traditional benefits like Universal Credit, but there is financial help available to support your training and living costs:

  • Student Finance: For higher education courses, you may be eligible for tuition and maintenance loans.
  • Advanced Learner Loans: Available for Level 3–6 courses if you're aged 19 or over.
  • College Bursaries: Many colleges offer help with kits, travel, and childcare.
  • Discretionary Support: You may also access hardship funds or childcare grants depending on your circumstances.

Speak to your college’s student services for help applying.

3. What is VAT free?

To comply with UK law, we must still charge and display VAT. VAT is applied to orders at the current rate; however, during a VAT-free promotion, Ellisons apply a discount equivalent to the VAT amount.

For example, if an item costs £100.00 excluding VAT, the usual total would be £120.00 (including VAT). During a VAT-free promotion, we discount the item to £83.33. With 20% VAT added (£16.67), the total remains £100.00 — the original ex-VAT price.

For more details, please visit our VAT free explained page.

4. How do I set up my own business?

To start your own beauty, nail or hair business, register as self-employed with HMRC, get professional insurance, and set up a clean, safe workspace. Build your brand with a name, logo and social media, and promote your services to attract clients. Don’t forget to invest in quality tools and products. Your college may also offer business support and guidance. Read our blog for marketing ideas to help you attract more clients.

For further support on product essentials to help get you started, get in touch via our contact form.

5. How do I set up a salon at home?

To set up a salon at home, start by creating a clean, professional space that’s separate from your living area. Check if you need permission from your landlord or local council. You’ll also need to register as self-employed, get treatment insurance, and follow health and safety guidelines. Invest in salon-quality equipment and promote your services online to attract local clients.

6. How do I work out a cost per treatment for training?

To calculate the cost per treatment, divide the total cost of your training kit or products by the number of treatments you can get from them. For example, if a product costs £50 and provides enough for 25 treatments, the cost per treatment is £2. Keep in mind to also factor in other costs like disposables, tools, and time.

7. Why do I need insurance?

Insurance is essential for protecting you while training in beauty, holistic, or hair services. It offers public liability cover during case studies and practical assessments, ensuring you're financially protected if something goes wrong. Insurance also reflects professionalism and is often a requirement from training providers. Learn more from BABTAC and explore their student membership for comprehensive cover.

8. Where do I get my student insurance details?

Your insurance details will be provided by your training provider or insurance company. If you’ve arranged student insurance through your college or course, check with your tutor or course administrator. For personal policies, refer to your confirmation email or account with the insurance provider.

9. Where can I get additional training?

Once you’re qualified at Level 2 or Level 3, you can continue to build your skills with our Academy online training courses. All our courses are accredited by The Guild of Beauty Therapists and the International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM) and endorsed by HABIA. Upon successful completion, you’ll be able to gain insurance to practise professionally.
