Waxing vs laser: what is the best hair removal method?

Waxing vs laser and shaving: what is the best hair removal method?

By Rebecca Hll, Digital Content Writer

With holiday season fast approaching, our minds are turning to hair removal and the influx of waxing appointments we’re expecting. From bikini waxing to leg waxing, our beauty therapists will soon be waging war on our clients’ unwanted body hair.

Hair removal options can be a minefield. There’s shaving, waxing, laser, electrolysis… The good news is that Ellisons offer a huge range of bestselling waxing brands, products and equipment to choose from. So, here’s everything you need to know to make a well-informed decision on which hair removal methods to offer your client.

When is the best time to wax?

The anagen stage of hair growth is the best time to wax. During this phase, the hair is actively growing and is connected to the follicle's root, allowing for removal from the source. Waxing at this stage helps to remove the hair more thoroughly and can help finer, softer regrowth over time. The anagen stage of hair growth is also the most ideal time to perform electrolysis, as the anagen follicles are fully connected to the root and is actively growing, so is the most effective in destroying the follicle and preventing regrowth.

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis hair removal uses a small electric current to permanently remove hair follicles. It involves inserting a very fine, sterile probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle, without puncturing the skin, to deliver a targeted electrical pulse. This pulse damages the follicle, preventing future hair growth.
Electrolysis is effective on all hair colours and skin types, unlike laser hair removal, which relies on pigment. It’s particularly suitable for smaller areas like the face, chin, or eyebrows. Multiple sessions are usually needed, as each hair must be treated individually, and hair grows in cycles. When performed correctly, electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal.

The stages of hair growth ...

The active hair growth phase, where cells in the hair follicle divide, creating new hair. The phase decides how long hair can grow before the next stage.
A brief phase in the hair growth cycle, where hair follicles shrink and hair strands lift. This lasts 10 days and marks the end of active hair growth.

A resting or shedding phase of the hair growth cycle, where hair follicles are inactive and hair is released and falls out. This phase lasts 3-6 months.

Laser hair removal vs waxing, shaving and electrolysis

  • Cost – waxing is more affordable upfront than laser treatments. Shaving is the cheapest option by far for clients, but is not as long-lasting as waxing, and can cause ingrown hair, razor burns and cuts

  • Instant results – there is no waiting period with waxing, unlike with laser treatments, as clients typically need 8-12 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to see the full benefit

  • Permanence - Waxing and shaving are not permanent, – but can reduce hair growth over time

  • Treating all hair types - You can, of course, wax and shave hair that has less melanin (the compound that produces pigment) –, but you cannot laser treat hair with little pigment (think blonde, grey, white and red). For lighter pigment hair, electrolysis hair removal treatment is recommended instead.

  • Ingrown hair and skin irritation – both waxing and shaving can irritate the skin and result in ingrown hairs, versus laser treatments which promise to eliminate these conditions. However, waxing can help to exfoliate, leaving your clients with smoother skin.

  • Training – Waxing training is the quickest to learn, usually taking just a few days; however laser hair removal training generally lasts a few weeks, as it requires a great deal more technical knowledge and often prior qualifications. Electrolysis training takes the longest, due to its precision, with more complex techniques taking 1 to 4 months, or more for galvanic methods.

  • Pain – shaving is relatively pain-free, unless you cut yourself, of course! However, waxing can be fairly painful, especially if proper skin prep is not undertaken. Electrolysis targets every single hair follicle (ouch!) and can be especially painful for those with very pale skin and dark hair. This is because the laser targets the pigment in each hair and not the skin, so as a general rule, the thicker and darker the hair, the more it tends to hurt.

  • Risks – laser clients must avoid sun exposure before, after and during their laser treatments, as the skin is so sensitive. Laser treatments are particularly risky on the face as it is always exposed to the sun and skin damage is more visible. It’s also difficult to treat tanned skin as tanning changes the pigment in the skin and the laser settings for skin type would not be correct.

“Laser hair removal might darken or lighten the affected skin. These changes might be temporary or permanent. Skin lightening primarily affects those who don't avoid sun exposure before or after treatment and those who have darker skin”, Mayo Clinic

How long does a hair wax last?

Hair waxing typically lasts from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your client’s hair growth cycle and the area waxed, although intimate areas grow faster. Most people start to notice regrowth around the 2 to 3-week mark, but the hair tends to grow back finer and softer with regular waxing.

  • Repeated waxing can help to weaken hair follicles
  • Waxing produces slower, finer more consistent regrowth
  • Waxing causes no long-term skin damage risks, unlike laser treatments present for sensitive skin types – laser treatments can cause pigmentation changes

Let’s do some myth-busting:

Myth: Waxing is completely painless

Reality: While some people have a higher pain threshold, waxing is not entirely painless—especially for first-timers or those with sensitive skin. However, the discomfort is usually brief and lessens over time with regular waxing. Waxing may sting a little, but it’s far from unbearable—and with the right prep and aftercare, it gets easier every time.

Myth: Hair waxing stops hair growth

Reality: Although it cannot stop it, waxing can reduce hair growth or at least slow it down over time, allowing for longer-lasting smoothness.

Myth: Hair needs to be long to wax

Reality: For the best results, your client’s hair should be at least ½ to ¾ cm long before waxing. This allows the wax to grip the hair effectively and remove it from the root. If the hair is too short, the wax may not adhere properly, which can result in not removing the hair properly and irritation.

Myth: Waxing causes ingrown hairs

Reality: Waxing can cause ingrown hairs, although it's less common than with shaving. Ingrown hairs occur when hair grows back into the skin instead of out, which can lead to small bumps and irritation, especially in areas with coarse or curly hair. To help prevent ingrown hairs, it’s important to exfoliate and moisturise regularly to help keep hair follicles clear before waxing.

Pain management tips for a more comfortable waxing experience

With much improved modern waxing technologies, hair removal waxing experiences are not as painful as they used to be in the past. We also offer up our top pain management tips. Encourage your client to:

•   Exfoliate 24 hours before their appointment to remove dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs
•   Avoid caffeine and alcohol beforehand which can increase skin sensitivity
•   Take a mild pain reliever (like paracetamol, or ibuprofen) 30 minutes before their appointment, if needed
•   Breathing tips – if your client is experiencing discomfort, it’s recommended they breathe deeply and stay relaxed during the session
•   Use numbing creams or sprays specifically formulated for waxing treatments
•   Stick to a routine—waxing every 4–6 weeks makes regrowth finer and the experience less painful over time

Quote mark

Only 10-20% of your hair is in each stage of the hair growth cycle at any one time, so top up waxing treatments every few weeks are important.”

Our top tips for successful hair removal wax application

Hot wax

  1. Always test the temperature on your wrist before applying to avoid burns.
  2. Clean and dry the skin thoroughly—avoid applying on oily or damp areas.
  3. Apply wax in the direction of hair growth and remove against it in a quick motion.
  4. Wait a few seconds for the wax to cool and harden slightly before removing.
  5. Hold the skin taut during removal to minimise discomfort and reduce bruising.
  6. Don’t go over the same area more than once—tweeze stray hairs instead.

Strip wax

  1. Heat the wax to a smooth, honey-like consistency—never too hot.
  2. Use a spatula to apply a thin, even layer in the direction of hair growth.
  3. Firmly press a wax strip over the wax, smoothing it down with your hand.
  4. Hold the skin taut and pull the strip back quickly against hair growth.
  5. Avoid applying wax to the same spot more than once to prevent irritation.
  6. Clean any residue with a suitable post-wax oil or cleanser.

Roller wax and hair wax sticks

1. Preheat the cartridge in a wax heater until it glides smoothly—usually 20–30 minutes.
2. Roll the wax in the direction of hair growth using steady, even pressure.
3. Apply a wax strip immediately and press down firmly for full contact.
4. Pull the strip off quickly against the direction of hair growth while keeping skin taut.
5. Wipe the roller head between uses to maintain hygiene and smooth application.
6. Avoid going over the same area multiple times to reduce skin irritation.

Pre- and post-wax care are essential for achieving the best results and maintaining healthy skin. Pre-wax care, like gently exfoliating and cleansing your client’s skin before waxing, helps remove dead skin cells and allows the wax to grip the hair more effectively, reducing the chance of breakage or irritation. Clean, dry skin also ensures better adhesion and minimises discomfort.

Post-wax care is just as important. Calming the skin after waxing with a soothing lotion or aloe vera, avoiding heat (like the sun, hot showers or saunas), and steering clear of tight clothing can help prevent irritation, ingrown hairs, and breakouts. Proper care before and after waxing helps to promote long-lasting smoothness, minimises redness and keeps your client’s skin calm.

When to use warm vs hot wax for different parts of the body

Hot wax and warm wax are both highly effective hair removal methods but serve different purposes.

Hot wax, otherwise known as ‘hard wax’, is applied thickly and allowed to cool slightly before being removed without a strip. It’s ideal for sensitive areas like the bikini line, underarms, and face, as it only grips the hair—not the skin—reducing discomfort and irritation.

Warm wax (or ‘strip wax’), on the other hand, is applied in a thin layer and removed with a fabric or paper strip. It’s best suited for larger, less sensitive areas, such as the legs, arms, chest, and back, where speed and efficiency are key. Choosing the right wax type helps ensure effective hair removal with minimal discomfort and optimal results.
