1930s
Ellisons was born in 1930 with a vision to transform the hair and beauty industry, by focusing on something that was often overlooked: exceptional customer service.
Our founders, Ethel Ellison and her husband Leslie, were not content with simply being another supplier – they saw the opportunity to elevate the entire experience, offering not just high-quality tools and products, but a level of service that set the standard for the industry and is still doing so today.
From the outset, we set out to deliver more than just products—we sought to create lasting relationships with customers, listening to their needs and offering tailored solutions.
This commitment to customer care, combined with an instinct for innovation, allowed us to quickly establish ourselves as a trusted partner, a commitment that is just as relevant now as it has been in the past.
1940s
Building on the momentum built over the previous decade, we recognised a key opportunity to better serve our growing customer base. At a time when many businesses were still offering traditional ordering methods, we pioneered the cash and carry model in the hair and beauty industry.
This forward-thinking approach allowed customers to access products they needed when they needed them, while also benefitting from lower prices.
We created a more cost-effective and efficient way for salon owners and professionals to stock their businesses.
This move was a game-changer, demonstrating our continued commitment to exceeding customer expectations. It reinforced our role as a valued partner, dedicated to helping our customers grow and thrive in this ever-evolving industry.
1950s and 60s
We continued to innovate by addressing a growing concern in the hair and beauty industry: the harshness of many products. Salon professionals and their clients often suffered skin irritations due to abrasive chemicals in treatments.
Recognising this gap, we added “manufacturer” to our list of accolades.
It wasn’t long before we developed safer, gentler alternatives that improved the client experience and supported the long-term health and wellbeing of salon employees.
This commitment to enhancing products and services helped salons deliver better care to clients while growing their businesses with confidence.
1970s
We continued to innovate by addressing a growing concern in the hair and beauty industry: the harshness of many products. Salon professionals and their clients often suffered skin irritations due to abrasive chemicals in treatments.
Recognising this gap, we added “manufacturer” to our list of accolades.
This enabled us to showcase our products and connect with professionals on a national level. By engaging directly with customers, we reinforced our commitment to their success, providing the tools and knowledge to grow their businesses.
Our presence at these pioneering events highlighted our role not just as a supplier, but as a true partner dedicated to shaping the future of the industry.
1980s
The 80s was a pivotal decade for Ellisons, marking a period of rapid growth and ground-breaking innovation.
We kicked off the decade by launching Sterex, the world’s first sterile, single-use disposable electrolysis needle – setting a new standard for hygiene and safety in the industry.
As the decade progressed, we continued to expand, launching our very first Ellisons branded salon equipment.
We also made waves with the first-ever screening of an advert for electrolysis treatments further positioning us as a forward-thinking leader, with a commitment to innovation and growth.
1990s
In the 90s, our focus was on expanding our reach and building a loyal audience across new sectors.
One of our most significant milestones was the creation of the college team, designed to support the students of today and the therapists of tomorrow, by providing tailored products and resources.
We also launched our health and leisure team, opening doors to new business opportunities within spas and hotels.
The 90s also saw the introduction of our great value furniture and equipment brand in 1991, Esthetix, which remains popular among our customers to this day.
2000s
The new millennium marked a transformative era for Ellisons, with a management buyout that ushered the business into a new chapter of growth and opportunity. With fresh leadership, we redefined our approach, focusing on building a recognisable, coherent, and memorable brand that would resonate with customers across the industry.
This decade marked our embracing of the digital revolution, launching our first website alongside our iconic catalogue, a pivotal step in connecting with customers in new ways.
By enhancing our online presence, we were able to offer a more convenient experience, while still providing exceptional hair and beauty products.
2010s
This decade saw further transformation as we evolved our Academy, shifting from hands-on, face-to-face courses to an online, personalised learning portal. This new platform made professional development more accessible and flexible, enabling therapists to learn at their own pace.
We also strengthened our focus on employee mental and physical wellbeing through the launch of our Workplace Wellbeing Charter.
2020s
Today, we continue to lead the way in innovation, ensuring we offer the best products, exceptional service, and embracing new technologies.
Strengthening our commitment to client and employee wellness and mental health, in 2021 we launched clinically-proven technologies by Gharieni – helping people manage stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders, and creating positive behavioural change. These solutions are designed not only to improve individual health, but to foster mindful work-spaces.
2023
Never standing still, we exclusively launched The GelBottle Inc in the UK, a globally renowned professional nail brand offering the original builder gel in a bottle BIAB™, gel polish, tools and spa accessories.
2023 also saw the launch of our own premium salon furniture, Esthetix Dolcevita™. The range offers premium, on-trend salon, clinic and spa furniture – without compromising on quality and functionality.
2024
A new management buyout was completed in 2024, heralding a new direction that would transform our business.
It was also the year of further technological advancements, with new digital platforms introduced - including a new AI-integrated website – developed to enhance the customer experience and streamline the way our professionals interact and shop with us.
2025
Another busy year for our team!
A strong pipeline of new product development led to the introduction of some of our most exciting brands and products yet. Major milestones included launching the first-to-market and our industry exclusive Japanese head spa; introducing Monpure, a brand dedicated to hair and scalp health; earning exclusive distribution of the hypoallergenic nail brand HONA, and premium Katie Barnes Tools Range.
In March 2025, we opened the UK’s first and only professional beauty furniture showroom. The launch event, attended by local West Midlands businesses, customers and key industry partner Professional Beauty generated a real buzz, firmly establishing Ellisons as a leader in the sector.
By staying ahead of trends, offering an exceptional service and continuously evolving, we are not just a supplier but a true partner - empowering everyone in our community to thrive, from classroom to career.
