The ultimate guide to HEMA-free nail application

Switching to HEMA-free products is more than just grabbing a new bottle — it’s about elevating your technique to deliver the best, most reliable results every time. In collaboration with HONA, we’re sharing the essential steps, top tips, and professional prep walkthrough you need to master HEMA-free application like a pro.

Why prep matters more with HEMA-free

When you choose a HEMA-free gel system, the way you prepare the nail becomes even more crucial. Unlike traditional formulas that rely on HEMA (Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) to boost adhesion, HEMA-free products depend on precision prep to create a strong, long-lasting base.

Great nails always start with great prep — and HONA’s guide breaks down exactly how to do it right.

Step-by-step prep for HEMA-free success

Step-by-step instructions for sanitising and dehydrating nails.

1. Sanitise and dehydrate

Sanitise your client’s hands before you begin to create a clean, professional foundation for the service. Lightly mist both hands and forearms with an anti-bacterial spray to minimise bacteria and ensure you’re working on a thoroughly cleansed surface.

Throughout the treatment, wear nitrile gloves as standard. Gloves are essential not only for maintaining the highest hygiene standards, but also for protecting your own skin from chemical exposure during the service.

Next, dehydrate the nail plate. Using a scrub motion, focus on the side walls, underneath the free edge and across the entire nail surface to remove oils and any remaining residue. Starting with proper dehydration eliminates surface oils before prep begins, supporting optimal adhesion and long-lasting results.

2. Push back the cuticle

Gently push back the cuticles, using the weight of your cuticle pusher rather than force. Remove only dry, non-living tissue — this keeps the nail plate healthy and lifting-free.

Begin by gently pushing back the cuticle to expose the full nail plate. Hold your tool like a pencil for maximum control and, using a cuticle pusher, carefully ease back the cuticle. Focus on lifting and removing non-living tissue from the nail surface, allowing the weight of the tool to do the work — avoid applying excess pressure.

Next, nip away any dry, white, non-living tissue using professional cuticle nippers. Only remove what is clearly non-living; healthy, living tissue will not appear dry or white and should never be cut.

Clean, precise cuticle work is essential for preventing product lifting and achieving flawless, long-lasting results for your clients.

3. Dehydrate again

Before etching, ensure the nail plate is completely free from any remaining dust, debris or surface oils. A thorough cleanse at this stage creates the ideal foundation for precise prep.

Saturate a lint-free wipe with 100% acetone and firmly scrub the side walls, around the cuticle area and underneath the free edge. Focus on detailing every area to ensure nothing is left behind.

This final cleanse supports optimal adhesion and ensures the nail plate is perfectly prepared before filing begins.

4. File and etch

Begin by shaping the free edge with a 240-grit nail file. File in one direction towards the centre of the nail, then repeat from the opposite side back to the centre. This controlled technique helps minimise splitting and reduces the risk of breakage.

Next, etch the nail plate using a 150-grit file. Apply next to no pressure and work only until the surface shine has been removed. You are not thinning the nail — you are simply refining the surface to create the texture needed for secure product adhesion.

Take care to etch every key area of the nail plate, including:

  • The cuticle area
  • The side walls
  • The top of the free edge

Missed areas are one of the most common causes of lifting, so precision and consistency at this stage are essential for long-lasting results.

5. Apply HONA TrueBond

Once prep is complete, we recommend going in with TrueBond to maximise adhesion and support long-lasting results.

Developed by HONA, TrueBond is a multi-purpose bonder designed to enhance retention — making it an excellent choice for heavy-handed clients or those prone to lifting.

Apply a thin, even layer after prep and cure for 30 seconds. From here, continue with your chosen HEMA-free base and builder system to complete the foundation of your service with confidence.

Refine your application technique

HEMA-free systems can vary slightly in consistency and working time compared to traditional high-HEMA formulas. Understanding product control, working in thin, controlled layers and following correct curing times is essential for achieving reliable, professional results.

When applying, focus on:

  • Thin, controlled, fully cured ‘paper-thin’ layers
  • Adhering to correct curing times
  • Avoiding flooding the cuticle area
  • Sealing and capping the free edge
  • Respecting the inhibition layer

When prep is strong and methodical, application becomes smoother, more predictable and far easier to master.
